Staying Secure on Public Wi-Fi

Dan
I often use public Wi-Fi in cafés, hotels, airports, and coworking spaces, but I’m never quite sure how safe those networks are. What practical steps can someone take to protect their connection and personal information without making everyday browsing unnecessarily complicated?

Public networks can be convenient, but it’s worth treating them with some caution, especially when entering passwords or handling private information. I usually recommend checking that websites use HTTPS, keeping device software updated, disabling automatic Wi-Fi connections, and avoiding sensitive transactions on unfamiliar networks. For an additional layer of privacy, using a strong VPN can help protect traffic while connected to shared Wi-Fi, which is particularly useful when you’re moving between different networks throughout the day.

I think the biggest issue with public Wi-Fi is simply forgetting that you’re sharing a network with people you don’t know. A few basic habits make a difference: connect only when necessary, turn off file sharing, and remove networks you no longer use from your saved connections.
